The One Thing: Reference Center Enhancements

A guide to help you make the most of your Reference Center

We have some exciting enhancements to help make the Reference Center more powerful than ever before. Within the Reference Center, you can now set documents to various visibilities based on plan and add expiration dates by tagging them. In doing so, you can make sure that only the right people see documents at exactly the right time.

We’re also using AI and machine learning to turn plan documents from the Reference Center into structured coverage details like deductibles, limits, and costs. This will expand coverage info beyond standard health plans, enabling tools like Sofia and plan comparison features to support employee self-service by pulling out key details.

At our Sept. 9 Reference Center Best Practices training, we discussed these new enhancements, best practices for folder structure and hierarchy, how to move documents within the Reference Center, benefits tagging, and more. The content was so good that we decided to put together a guide detailing how you should set up your Reference Center to make the most of these enhancements.

How Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) Drive Talent Retention

79% of employees say DEIB efforts show employer empathy, yet only 52% say their company has DEIB initiatives

Our latest State of Workplace Empathy data shows that while many business leaders personally value DEIB, CEOs are pulling back on workplace initiatives in the face of mounting pressures. Yet this retreat comes at a cost: top talent.

Our DEIB Special Report reveals that companies without DEIB programs face higher turnover risk—employees are 35% more likely to leave—and miss out on measurable gains in retention, innovation, and culture. For HR and benefits leaders, the takeaway is simple: investing in DEIB isn’t risky business—it’s a proven strategy to engage employees, strengthen organizational culture, and drive bottom-line results.

IRS publishes draft instructions for IRS forms 1094-C and 1095-C

The IRS has published draft instructions for the 2025 version of the 1094-C and 1095-C.  Employers should review the reporting requirements in preparation for the distribution and filing of 1094-C/1095-C forms and ACA data submissions due in early 2026.

11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rules that transgender care exclusion is not discriminatory in 8-5 ruling

A federal appeals court, in a divided decision, overturned a district court ruling that found that a Georgia county’s health plan discriminated against a sheriff for refusing to pay for her gender-affirming surgery. The appeals court ruling focused on the fact that the exclusion was applied equally to all plan participants, did not discriminate based on a protected characteristic, and did not violate Title VII of the Civil Rights Act.

The judges and courts were divided on this case and whether the plan was impermissibly discriminatory. This case serves as a great reminder for employers to work with their appropriate counsel to ensure that their plan’s rules do not discriminate based on protected characteristics.
