Hawaii wildfires and Southern California tropical storm may bring need for more COBRA, employee benefits relief
Following devastating wildfires in Hawaii and rare tropical storms in Los Angeles and surrounding areas, client employers may want to consider providing extensions for affected employees regarding plan deadlines. It is not uncommon for the IRS to issue relief following natural disasters, including asking and, in some instances, mandating that employers extend relief to the impacted plan participants by extending deadlines to enroll in or pay for COBRA or report certain life events. While the IRS has not yet issued any relief, client employers with populations in impacted areas may wish to provide additional time for those impacted by these disasters. Please have your clients contact their client service team if they’d like to provide such relief.
