IRS relief for Southern California wildfire victims: Key deadlines and options for your clients
The IRS has granted relief to individuals in Southern California affected by wildfires and straight-line winds starting January 7, 2025. Tax filing and payment deadlines are extended until October 15, 2025.
This includes an extended deadline for 2024 contributions to IRAs and HSAs. Affected taxpayers may also be eligible for a special disaster distribution, which waives the 10% early withdrawal penalty and spreads the tax liability over three years. Additionally, hardship withdrawals from retirement plans or IRAs may be available.
Keep your clients in the loop and have them check with their plan providers to explore these relief options and ensure they’re maximizing available benefits.
