IRS issues draft instructions for IRS Form 8889

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has issued draft instructions for the 2025 Form 8889, which is used to report HSA contributions, determine deductions, and report distributions. A key update allows telehealth and other remote care services to be covered pre-deductible without disqualifying a plan as a high-deductible health plan.

Medicare Part D Notice of Creditable Coverage deadline approaches

The Medicare Part D Notice of Creditable Coverage must be distributed before October 15 of each year to Medicare-eligible individuals covered by or applying to a group health plan that offers prescription drug benefits.

With the evolving benefits available under Medicare Part D beginning in 2026, group health plan sponsors should ensure their plan’s creditable status is confirmed against the new requirements and ensure the notices are delivered timely. Failure to provide timely notices can result in employees facing late enrollment penalties and confusion during Medicare enrollment.
